After reading about the 21st Century Skills I consider the “Social Responsibility” to be the most essential because it involves adult life as a whole. Students would be working on skills that they will carry on into middle and high school, college and into their community and workplace as they become working adults.
It is so hard to decide which 21st Century Skill I consider to be the most essential. However I do believe that in many ways they overlap each other so that even if I single out one, which I shall, it will still cover some of the others that I consider to be so valuable.
I consider accountability and adaptability to be the most essential 21st Century Skill. If students can master this they will take responsibility for their decisions and paths. This is important in every aspect of life in school, family, work, community and beyond. They will also adapt and adjust as life brings changes, which of course are ineveitable.
I agree with jmeche it is hard to pick just one 21st Century Skill for they all play off of each other, but I will.
I believe the most essential 21st Century Skill is Social Responsibility. We must be mindful of the "Bigger Picture". When our students inter the workplace, school, and community their behavior should demonstrate responsibility to those around them. Behavior that is socially acceptible.
I think that the Interpersonal and Collabrative Skill is the most important 21st century skill. I think the most important part is respecting others, being adaptable, and responsibility. This skill is very broad and is very difficult for some people. I find that a lot of adults lack this abilities, so they are very important to teach our students. M Pentecost
I would have to say that 'Communication Skills' is the most essential 21st Century Skill. Communication involves not only being able to put out information, but also being able to comprehend information. This is vital for students because they are expected to be able to read written literature (books, novels, etc), but also multimedia forms of literature including the internet, and researching online, etc.
I would consider Social Responsibility and Accountablilty and Adaptability to be the most important of 21st Century Skills. To me, the two skills go together. Students need to learn to act socially responsible so that when they become adults they know how to act appropriately. They also need to know they are responsible for their actions in the real world. This is important for when they become adults in the workplace to hold themselves responsible and not try to blame others.
While all of these skills are essential, I believe priority should be given to Accountability and Adaptability. My interpretation of this skill is that we should be teaching children authenticity, integrity and self-responsibility in all walks of life. If being responsible for one’s own choices is taught at a young age, it will last a lifetime. Children will be able to function more effectively within their community.
I consider interpersonal and collaborative skills to be the most essential 21st Century skill. Throughout one's life, a person will be faced with an infinite amount of situations in which they must communicate and cooperate with others. This skill enables a person to be successful with some of the other 21st century skills such as: communication, self-direction, and social responsibility. To truly succeed with interpersonal and collaborative skills, a person has to be socially aware and self-directed in order to be a leader. They must also be able to communicate effectively to their peers. Because this skill encompasses so many other skills, I feel that interpersonal and collaborative skills are the most essential of the 21st Century Skills.
WSeright I believe the most essential 21st Century Skill is self-direction because it builds confidence. It entails critical thinking, accountability, and communication skills. The self-directed learners must collaborate and share ideas with others in order to achieve the aims of their projects. When a learning environment has provided opportunities for student to grow to this stage in learning, I believe they can achieve any goal in life.
I feel that the most important skill is communication. Without effective communication between you and your students classroom procedures would not be successful. Teachers must also communicate with other teachers to create a successful school environment. Communication also cover that between the teacher and the parent. Parents should always be involoved in their child's learning.
In my opinion, communication skills are the most essential 21st Century skills that we can teach our students. There are so many choices when it comes to communicating. We can communicate verbally, via email on the computer, through telephone/cell phone (speaking and/or text messaging), through blogs (such as this one), etc. As adults, we have learned that communicating your thoughts/ideas is a very important part of not only your job and school life, but as your home life as well. Communicating what you are thinking and feeling allows the people around you to understand you. Communication is a tool that teachers use to understand how much a student understands what they are taught and what the teacher can do to help the student understand the lesson better. With strong communication skills the people around us will be able to better understand what we are thinking.
While all 21st Century Skills are essential, communication, I feel, is the most essential. This skill is important as communication is done everyday, sometimes without thinking about it. Whether young or old, communication is universal and dictates how people live. Regardless of the form (i.e., oral, written, etc.), communication seeks to express wants, wishes, desires, and needs. For students, the mastery thereof promotes positive relationships that are healthy and long-lasting. In the same way, being able to effectively communicate in places such as school, work, and home, ensures progression and success in the real-world.
All of the 21st Century skills need to be addressed in today's classroom. However, if I had to choose one, it would be critical and systems thinking. These higher level-thinking skills are often absent from our time crunched school days. Although they are now tested for in our various assessments; due to the prep time, class time, and maybe even ignorance on the part of the teacher, critical thinking skills are put on the back burner. It's these skills that spark so many of the other 21st Century Skills, such as intellectual curiosity, problem identification, etc. Plus, I feel that enabling children to think critically early will help them to find what it is they really want to do in life. I feel it is a way of tapping into students' individual passions. When they are practicing these higher order thinking skills, they will have to question what interests them on a deeper level. Isn't that what we all want for our students?
Without a doubt, what is obvious to me to be the most essential 21st Century skill needed by anyone hoping to live cohesively with the current trends is computer suavity. Not only are educational institutions quickly requiring students to become proficient with computers, most responsibilities of life (such as bills, employment, etc) are inescapably incorporating computers. Unless the world was effected by an apocalyptic meltdown, you would have to live under a proverbial rock to believe that computers are not becoming more of an essential than a privilege.
Yes, no one will not survive if they do not have skills with computers in today's modern society, but they will find certain activities to be difficult. A prime example would be this class and the obvious fact that technology courses require some form of technology. Essentially speaking, only basic computer skills are really required but it may not be too fantastic to predict that prowess could be required in the future. Personally, I hope we don't, as a society, get to the point that we have to rely on technology that heavily though.
I believe that adaptability is the most essential 21st century skill to have because then no matter what comes at you you're able to handle it. For example, when new computer software programs come out if people are able to adapt and learn it, then they now have another resource to use. Also, if a person's employer needs their employee to use a newer updated version to do the same thing, then the only way an employee will be able to keep their job is to adapt to the new program.
I would have to say that the most essential skill is communication. It is what is fueling the world right now. The world is rapidly becoming a smaller place and we have to adapt to keep it in check. With communication, the society as a whole can keep informed, new information is dispersed, and accessibility to other countries has sky rocketed. With good skills, the world can work together rather than against and keep moving forward.
I believe that self-direction is the most important 21st century skill. Communication and team work play an extremely vital role, but no amount of communication is going to help if one does not first have a good understanding of himself. A student needs to be able to know what it is that he wants to get out of a situation, whether it be learning, communicating, working, etc. It is important that the student also knows how to function well in any situation, not just inside the classroom.
I believe that the most essential 21st century skill is social responsibility. Social responsibility carries throughout your whole life and not just throughout education.
The most essential 21st century skills is the ability to use and implement technology into the classroom. Technology is the future of the classroom and if your behind the curve you lose out on many great opportunities.
Adaptability and communication are the most important 21st century skills. Technology is always changing and if we aren't adaptable, we won't be able to communicate as effectively in a world that relies so heavily on communication. Students are always ahead of the curve when it comes to technology, so as a teahcer I need to be able to adapt to new technology so that I am able to communicate on the same level as my students.
Blog #2 21st Century Skills I feel critical thinking is the most important 21st Century skill for students. Ultimately, teachers want their students to be successful in life and to become contributing members of society. If this is to occur, students must become critical thinkers. Today's world faces many challenges. The students of today will be solving the problems of tomorrow. They need to know more than just core subjects. Students must be able to take what they have learned and do something with it. They have to be able to think critically to solve difficult problems. Oftentimes, in classrooms, higher level thinking is not encouraged. The main focus is on standardized testing and trying to cram in as much instruction as possible, regardless of the cost. If students are to be prepared for the future, some changes must occur. Education must emphasize higher level thinking skills while utilizing project based learning and integrating technology.
