After working on the power point I see how a student could really enjoy working on the computer to organize information that they are learning. By using the computer I remember the content much faster and seem to retain what I am doing. Also by using technology the being at school and doing school work is not to bad and not at all boring. I am sure a student would prefer to use the computer than write since most of the day is spent in a regular class working with pencil and paper. Something else that I see that would be a benefit to the student is that by using technology, content needs to be well organized, so students are being more productive and learning more skills other than just the projects content. The publication is especially content driven and by putting a publication together students would gain such a better grasp of the material. By having all the students working on the publications or presentations the students are authentically involved in their learning and they should be much more motivated to learn. Half of truly learning is having an interest in the content and I think technology would make this happen. Students want something different and they need to learn using many different tools, so presentation and publications are great tools to enhance learning.
After creating my student sample I realize how important it is to make your content understandable to the kids. While working on my power point presentation I had a hard time breaking it down far enough to be from the student perspective. I think the idea of using technology to enhance a lesson or student work is extremely important. We as teachers look at technology with students as something extra, but the reality is we need to think of technology as a facilitator of learning. The kids reallyenjoy using the computers and are often times more knowledgable than we are. This sample was a great way for me to open up my thoughts and lessons and enabled me to go so much farther with my unit.
Learning can be fun and exciting. This was my first power-point and publication. This may possibly the students first time too. Children are amazed by technology and catch onto it very quickly. Technology can enhance learning and be a facilitator to research information when preparing for an assigned project or unit. There is so much information to be absorbed that this gives the students the availability of multitudes of resouces and views. The publication was more "group" cooperation driven which is great as long as all participants do their fair share. In the publication the students reflected on the material they had just learned and got them "pumped" for the upcoming lesson that they are to work on over the next few weeks.
From a student’s perspective, creating my very own publication or power point is so exciting and fun. As a child, who has an attention span of approximately 15 minutes, doing a project or assignment on a computer is way more interesting than the typical paper and pencil. Using these means for a class project is a more engaging way for a child to express their creativity and demonstrate what they have learned. Not only is it fun, but using such technology is a skill students will need for high school, college, and beyond. After all, being tech savvy is worth major brownie points now a days when a potential employee is job hunting.
After creating my PowerPoint and Publisher student sample I realized how exciting this will be for my students. Students will love to work with these programs as it's a fun way to create a project. Also, students will have to really do their research and/or understand the topic at hand when creating projects using PowerPoint and/or Publisher as you can really include a lot of details in these.
Learning and using these programs with students will greatly assist them in the future when they start their own careers.
Throughout the process of creating my student samples I have come to realize that hands on activities for students, especially when dealing with technology, are an awesome way for them to grasp a greater understanding of the units that they are learning about. I think that having a student create a power point presentation gives the student the ability to take ownership in his/her presentation and also allows the student to display creativity that might otherwise, not come out. The students also get a chance to present their work to the class in a way that is more enjoyable for the entire class. I can remember having to stand in the front of the classroom at the teacher’s wooden podium and reading my book report to my fifth grade teacher and entire fifth grade class. Presenting a power point presentation to them about the book would have been much more exciting, not to mention not near as scary for an 11 year old girl. I feel that the students are going to want to do the very best that they can on a power point presentation that they know they will be presenting to their peers. This means that they will work hard to gather all of the research that they will need for the presentation and also be creative when putting the presentation together. After all, who doesn’t want to impress their classmates?
After completing the PowerPoint and brochure, I saw how valuable technology can be when used in the classroom. While doing these projects, I gained a better understanding of why teachers should strive to make this a part of their students’ learning experiences. Of course these projects take time and effort, but it can be done when the teacher allows the imaginations of their students to open the door to the impossible. It’s no secret that the world of technology has improved over the years, and has become accessible to nearly everyone in the world, including students. Whether they’re typing a letter or sending an email to a friend, they have a concept of the many benefits of technology. As for students completing projects such as the PowerPoint and/or brochure, they would have a blast! It’s simple – allow students to be both creative and innovative, using the content that they’ve learned while in the classroom.
Wow I really enjoyed creating the student samples. Coming from a student's perspective and thinking like a child was hard at first, then I realized the students are already knowledgeable about computers and how they work. The tools and software available to students in today’s classroom will help them to learn and retain what they learn. This was a fun project for students, and provides wonderful teaching moments. I am sure the skills they use on Power Point and Publisher will be used many times over in the future to come. By the time they are out in the working world they will have the advantage of knowing how to use the technology.
From working on my Power Point presentation, I realized how important it is to make activities as hands-on as possible. I feel that being able to work on the computer is so much fun for children of all ages that they don't mind researching projects as much. They also get a sense of satisfaction in creating the presentations on their own. It is definetly more appealing than going to the library and researching in books and hand writing all of their notes. I only wish that when I was in school we had the technology that children have now. In this day and age it is so important for children to learn at a young age as much as they can about technology. I intend to use as much technology as I can in my lessons when I become a teacher.
It is very easy to reflect on this project from a student perspective. Everything I have done and continue to do both with the student presentation powerpoint and the publication has been as a student. So much of it is new to me. Through the whole process I was continuing to discover new things and new levels of both technology and how to present it.
At no time do I feel like I am doing nonsense or time-filler work. I can completely see how this is relative to my daily life and times.I got so completely lost in the creation and so genuinely excited about the outcome, that I couldn't wait to share it, with my own children and my classes.
I can't help but feel confident that this is the way the majority of students will feel. That what they are working on is relevant to their lives, exciting, fun and memorable. They will want to share it with their families and friends, too!
I enjoyed making the presentation and publication immensely. I can't wait to actually use this is my classroom! I believe the students will be so engrossed they may not even realize they are absorbing content. Thinking skills are a must when creating projects, beginning with brainstorming an idea/topic to ways of researching information to deciding presentation style. When students are expected to "think outside the box", they will rise to the occasion. When each member of a group has a specific portion of the assignment to complete, they will use social skills in negotiating time on computers and assignment responsibilities. A technology project can meet the learning and social needs of students at all skill levels and interests.
Not being a teacher, but knowing teachers, this class is really teaching me what it takes to not only integrate technology into the classroom, but to also be an effective teacher. Apparently teaching is no longer just standing in front of the classroom and lecturing on a subject – say Black History. Instead, to get the information across to the students, I’m learning to create brochures for handouts, compile information into power point presentations, and add pictures to keep the students interested. I’m excited about all that I’ve learned so far, and am looking forward to seeing everything come together in our presentations.
I can easily answer this question, because I felt (and actually was) like a student while doing my Power Point. I realized that if I had all the time in the world to complete it, I could've gone on and on. Students would get even more fired up about it than I was. I can picture a student becoming completely engrossed in all of the possibilities that these kinds of technological lessons can provide. It also struck me how accessible this kind of technology is. Students of all ages could undoubtedely handle the step-by-step simplicity of Power Point.
The Power Point Presentation was fun and exciting to do. The technology helps broaden the imagination, gives a fuller understanding of the concepts being taught because it is so visual. Intergrating technology into the classroom lessens the time it take to do assignments which I thinks is important because as a student I didn't get bored. Technology gives a new meaning to learning in that it enables a student to correlate what he/she knows with what they need to know so that they can demonstration what they have learned and put it to practice in a real life situation. That's what learning is all about. Knowing what to do, how to do it, and get it done.
I feel like working on the power point, though very new to me as a mac user, was actually enjoyable, and sorta fun. I liked that I could sit there and just fiddle with a program like an experiment and get all these different things to happen. Sounds and animations, it was thoroughly enjoyable. So from a teachers standpoint, I can only assume that a student would have just as much fun as someone who is Windows illiterate.
I feel that students learn in several different ways and the more ways that we can develop for students to learn the better. Publications and Presentations are a great way for some students to learn especially if they are visual learners. I feel that my presentation was pretty good aside from my sounds not working.
I think that working with power point is very interesting. I enjoyed working with the program and learning the ends and outs of the software. The Power Point was fun to work on and I had a good time learning researching the information.Microsoft Publisher was a little harder to deal with but once I got the hang of it I also enjoyed this program as well.Getting the chance to create my own news letter let draw on creativity that I didn't even know I had.
After working on the power point, I see how much fun a student can have learning by using power point. It lets the students really be creative by designing their backgrounds, colors, fonts, and etc. while still being within a teacher's boundary for an assignment, and at the same time the students are really learning.
After working on publisher, I saw how enjoyable designing your own brochure really is. It made me feel like I was really creating a legitimate brochure that I would hand out to give to people to provide information on percussion instruments. I believe that students would also get the same feeling that they're creating a legitimate publication, and would try their best to make the information within it factual.
I enjoyed using PowerPoint and Publisher. I think that by requiring students to make presentations and publications they are able to get a better understanding for the subject. It also allows students to be creative and go above and beyond. I really liked having the ability to incorporate graphics and sounds to my presentation. I think that this will enhance learning because it reaches out to students with different learning styles. Overall, I think my student samples presented the information in a fun way that would be interesting to students.
Taking a step back and realizing that I'm trying to work from a student and teacher's perspective has been an interesting experience. I'm realizing that it's hard to estimate the ability of all students and assign something that will not be to terrible, something that is interesting, AND something that is educational.
Students learn in many different ways so it is important for us a educators to make sure that we are meeting the needs of all of the children. The PowerPoint and the Publication is just another tool that we can add to our teaching so that we may be able to help at least one other student. Both of these teaching methods are visually stimulating so we have a much better chance of reaching the students that are visual learners.
In these assignments, I was able to see both sides of teacher and student interaction. Following the directions is easier than writing them. As a student, it is really exciting when a teacher gives you the kind of creative freedom that you get with technology based assignments. When working on these kind of assignments you learn not only about your assigned topic, but also many necessary and useful technology skills.
After having completed the PowerPoint and the publication, I can see why these assignments were requirements. It was fun to add animations to my PowerPoint, choose pictures, add sounds, and edit the content, but it was also quite a learning experience as even doing those steps proved to be more challenging then I initially thought they would be. The PowerPoint was also the first time that I have had to incorporate internal and external links into an assignment, so it was good that I was able to learn how to do that. I have done PowerPoint before, but I have never worked with Publisher, and was surprised to see how many applications were involved in Publisher. Though it was frustrating at times trying to figure out exactly how to do certain things in both assignments, in the end, I’m glad that I was able to do them.
It was a challenge for me to make a presentation as a student at that particular level. I enjoyed doing it very much and I could see how my students would be able to use it as well. These projects help them not only in the subject area that I will be teaching, but in many other subject areas. These projects are very useful for us to be doing because I need to know how to make a powerpoint in the music feild so that I can easily teach a child how to make a powerpoint in the music feild.
Although I have worked on Power Points before, I never knew that there was a Internal Hyperlink feature. It was very useful to learn this and to use it when presenting it as a classroom assignment. I found it harder to play the student than teacher. Writing the rubric and directions was tougher than the assignment itself as I had to figure out what exactly I wanted- then do it. I believe using power point is a great way to teach in classrooms as it gives the students creative freedom. That alone could be the motivating factor to help them produce fantastic projects.
It made my imagination go to la la land. My little inner child popping out ideas and what would be fun. I had a hard time thinking of what level the child would be since looking back at myself in elementary school, the technology wasn't there, so of course I wouldn't know what to do. Back then, I was limited to MS Paint and Notepad.
Needless to say, much has changed and it would probably take me a small project to see what they are capable of before I plunged in. I don't want to be discouraging. I'm excited to try out a few of these projects if I am able.
I felt that both projects were good for students to do, but some of it would have been very hard from a middle school stand point. I know that the students would enjoy exploring the programs but unless they had the right instruction that project could go badly.
#4 I enjoyed creating the PowerPoint and the publication, and I am sure my students would too. Students love to use computers, and I know most grow tired of doing written work or lectures. These projects engage students in what they are learning, and at the same time, gives them an opportunity to express themselves and be creative.
